George Street cleanup

We will pick up litter, pull weeds, and cut back vegetation along George Street from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 18, in preparation for the hill climb on July 26. Both the street itself and sidewalk spaces need to be cleared to accommodate cyclists and spectators at the George Street Bike Challenge for Major Taylor.

Bring your own work/garden gloves and water bottle, and, if you can, tools or equipment such as a cordless weedwhacker (string trimmer), clippers, loppers, shovel, rake, or wheelbarrow. Brooms and trash bags will be provided.

Park on Main Street, Harvard Street or State Street, not in the lots on George Street itself.

Many hands will make light work. With enough people, it should only take an hour or two to get the two blocks of George Street into shape. Also, the Main Street sidewalks in front of Garden Fresh Courthouse Cafe and Alpha Graphics need to be swept and cleared of cigarette butts. Brooms won’t get all the butts; they’ll need to picked up by hand, which is why you need gloves.

RSVP to Seth at georgestreetchallenge@gmail.com and let him know what you can bring to the cleanup.

Rain date for the cleanup is 9-11 a.m. July 19. The George Street Bike Challenge is July 26; no rain date.

Litter is likely to keep happening, so anyone who can’t make it July 18 is welcome to show up the next day or at dawn Sunday to do touch-up. BYO trash bags and wear gloves.
